“So, why do you dance? For her or for you?”

“I figured the least I can do is carry on her dream if she can’t.”

“I don’t know much about dancers, but athletes’ careers aren’t forever. Your mom was going to have to stop eventually. I can only imagine what a professional dancer’s body goes through. The toll it takes.”

“Yeah, but she should’ve been able to quit when she was ready. Not be forced into it because of me. She’s the reason I’m going to Berkeley, you know.”

“She went there too?”

She huffs a laugh. “No. She was supposed to. The blame for that is on my dad—he convinced her to go to NYU—but I thought maybe she’d like seeing Berkeley through my eyes. Like I can make up for her missing Broadway by giving her a front row seat to something she didn’t experience.”

“Nova.” I chide with a light chuckle to not offend. “I think there’s some misplaced guilt here.”

“You try living in Ruby ‘The Legend’ Pratt’s shadow.”

“I guess I wouldn’t know.”

Maybe it’s good Dad left when I was young, and Mom was always busy. There were no expectations placed on Willa and me. We were just doing our best to get by.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean that as a you-me thing, like my life was so much harder. I was just thinking out loud.”

“No, I get it. Life without a dad would be hard. What I meant was…you don’t know how it feels to live with the knowledge that you’re the reason someone’s entire life changed, the reason their career ended.”

I pop up to my elbow, my pulse pounding in my ears. “No, I just know how it feels to live with the idea that I wasn’t wanted at all.” I shake my head, noting the edge of sympathy in her eyes. “I don’t need pity, Nova. It’s just a fact. Do you think Willa holds Clem responsible for the changes in her life? That she wouldn’t say that every altered plan was worth it?”

Nova’s mouth twists as her brows pull together.

“That is the part of your story I’d tell you was wrong.”

“What?” she asks.

“You said other than your dad, dancing is your mom’s one true passion. I bet if I asked her, she’d put you and your brothers and sister before dance. Just like Clem comes before anything Willa ever thought she’d do with her life. I guarantee you, your mom loves you more than she misses what she didn’t get to do.”

Nova tucks her hands beneath her cheek. “Is that your subtle way of telling me to quit whining? Poor little rich girl complaining about mommy not loving her.”

“I’m telling you there are worse things, Spitfire.”

“Like being forced to watch two musicals in one week?”

I laugh. “Like being forced to keep my hands to myself when all I want is to cross this room and finish the kiss you started tonight.”

Nova’s bottom lip tucks between her teeth, and my hell. “Nobody’s forcing you to stay in your bed, Dev.”

“I am.” I lay back down and train my eyes on the ceiling. “With every ounce of my strength, Dimples. I am.”

The Map of Nova and Dev - 3 weeks!

Once checked in, Devin and I step into the elevator.
“One room?” His eyebrow arches.
Adjusting my toiletry bag on my shoulder, I press the button for our floor. “When my parents booked the room, it was supposed to be Julia and me. But rest assured, there are two beds, so don’t get any ideas.”
“Sounds to me like you’re the one with the ideas. I just asked if we were sharing a room.”
“You know, I went over all this with you on the phone weeks ago.” Sharing a hotel with a guy I’ve never met felt off at first, but I couldn’t ask Dad to foot the bill for an extra ten or more nights by booking Devin his own rooms on this trip, and it didn’t feel right to put the cost on Sharon when his riding with me is more of a favor to us. It will be fine. I packed sports bras, leggings, and tees to sleep in. We can respect each other’s privacy. “You do remember that discussion, don’t you?”
“Yeah, sure.”
Oh, he so does not.
“I don’t have a problem sharing with you, Nova. I’m just surprised your parents agreed. Archer told me how your dad played the overprotective father when they first met; that was over my sister, not his daughter. I didn’t expect him to be cool with this.”
That makes two of us. “My family’s been through a lot over the years. My dad, aunt, and uncle abide by this carefree live and love life motto. I don’t know. He trusts me, and he trusts Willa.” The doors slide open when we reach our floor. “Plus, I say the word, and he’ll round up my uncles to hunt you down. No questions asked.”
Devin’s steps lag, and I curb my smile as I open our door and wait. When he reaches our room, his palm slaps the door and pushes it wide for me to enter first. “You’re a Daddy’s girl, aren’t you?”
“My daddy raised me to be my own girl.” I dip under his arm. “But he’ll always have my back.”

ONE week until #TAAHR! Here's an excerpt

One Week

One Week —

Sneak Peeeeekkkkk 👀

Weaving my fingers into his silky curls, I draw his head away. “You know if I wait too long to put her in bed, she’ll wake when I move her and be up for hours.”

His blue eyes, dark with passion, read me. Whatever he sees causes him to push up and move to sit on the opposite end of the couch as I swing my feet out of his way. I sit up, combing my fingers through my tangled hair and adjusting my twisted shirt.

My gaze flicks to the expanse between us, and even though he’s not looking my way, Archer grins. “Yes, I am purposefully sticking to this corner. If you want to leave, I need to stay on my side.”

The man can read my mind. I shake my head. “I didn’t say anything.”

His thumb swipes at his bottom lip. “You didn’t have to.”

See? Mind reader. I follow his gaze to Clem fast asleep on Eli’s blue blanket on the floor, rattles and soft blocks strewn about.

Archer releases a heavy sigh, and my attention snaps to him. “What is it?”

“I’m gonna want to move fast, Will.” He pinches the bridge of his nose and swings his head toward me. “That’s the danger of our age difference. I know what I’m looking for, and I know you fit the bill.”

An invisible pull urges me closer. Sitting on the edge of the couch, I angle his way and take his hand. “So, what are you saying?”

Archer pops to his feet and drags me to stand with him, hauling me into an unyielding embrace. He buries his face into my hair. “I’m saying that I don’t want you to go,” he whispers in my ear. “Not to your apartment, Michigan, or anywhere I’m not at your side at the end of the day.”
